Take action

Issue found: Violation of News policy

Your app contains content that doesn't comply with the News policy. Apps that declare themselves or are listed as "News" in the Google Play Console must meet the News policy requirements. Specifically, it appears that your app:

  • Doesn't contain a dedicated website or in-app page that's easy to find and clearly shows relevant contact information. Make sure to:
    • Add a link to the News website in your Google Play Console account in the "Store listing contact details" section
    • Include a clearly labeled section for contact information in your app or website (such as "Contact us" or similar)
    • Add a phone number or email address

Issue details

We found an issue in the following area(s):

  • App website: Please see attached screenshot APP_WEBSITE-346.png
  • App website: Please see attached screenshot APP_WEBSITE-9410.png
  • Version code 123: In-app experience: Please see attached screenshot IN_APP_EXPERIENCE-4615.png

To bring your app into compliance, follow these steps:

  1. Make necessary updates to your app, such as:
    • Create a valid website or in-app contact page that includes either an email address or a phone number but not a link to a social media account.
    • Ensure that the app contains content that's less than three months old.
    • Provide original sources (author or publisher) for all articles.
  2. Confirm that your News declaration made in the Google Play Console is accurate and up to date. You can update your declaration in the "App content" (Policy > App content > News apps) section of the Play Console.

About the News policy

An app that declares itself as a 'News' app in the Google Play Console ("News apps") must meet all of the following requirements. News apps that require a user to purchase a membership must provide an in-app content preview for users prior to purchase.

News apps MUST:
  • provide ownership information about the app and the source of news articles including, but not limited to, the original publisher or author of each article. In cases where it is not customary to list individual authors for articles, the news app must be the original publisher of the articles. Please note that links to social media accounts are not sufficient forms of author or publisher information.
  • have a dedicated website or in-app page that is clearly labelled as containing contact information, is easy to find (for example, linked at the bottom of the home page or in the site navigation bar), and provides valid contact information for the news publisher, including either a contact email address or phone number.
Additionally, apps that contain primarily user generated content (for example, social media apps) should not declare themselves as News apps.

News apps MUST NOT:
  • contain significant spelling and/or grammar errors,
  • contain only static content, or
  • have affiliate marketing or ad revenue as its primary purpose.
Please note that News apps may use ads and other forms of marketing to monetize as long as the app's primary purpose isn't to sell products and services or generate advertising revenue.

News aggregator apps must be transparent about the publishing source of the content in the app and each of the sources must meet News policy requirements.

Please consult this article for how best to provide the required information.
